Tanzania - week 3

We started off week 3 with a visit to Isaya's boma - one of the massai who lives on camp with us! We got to meet his family - parents and brothers and sisters - they have very large families over here especially as the men have more than one wife. We also got our first chance to greet the elders so had to make sure we knew exactly what to say - I think most of us still got confused and got it wrong but they didnt seem to mind seeing as we tried! We also looked through all the jewellery Isaya's mum makes and got to order jewelery from her so i'm getting a few bits made to bring home!

On Tuesday Isaya took us on a medicine walk where we went out into the bush and were shown what different plants they use to cure different things - we got pretty concerned though when we were shown a plant that cures AIDS - didnt really feel right telling the Massai that unfortunately at present there is no cure!

Wednesday we went to the school in the village - we had started painting it the previous week. When we arrived it was just a room with 4 concrete walls no proper floor and a few desks. So we are painting the walls white at the top and yellow at the bottom and the door and windows sills green - It is now starting to look quite good and we are also planning on concreting the floor and getting new desks! We had a really good day and it was really nice as lots of kids and teachers from the secondary school next door came in and were telling us how much they appreciated our work!
